Musical Alphabet

This passion project is my contribution to 36 Days of Type, an annual challenge that invites designers of any kind to create the letters and numbers of the alphabet in any style or medium throughout 36 consecutive days. I chose to go with a musician theme for this round of the project, though I only did the letters portion, so it was more like 26 Days of Type for me.

Sketches

This was my second time doing the challenge. The first year, I didn’t set any restrictions—but this time, I limited myself to a five-color palette. I expected it to be harder, but the constraints actually made things easier. I struggle with decision-making, especially around color, so choosing the palette up front saved time over the 26 days. I also stuck to capital sans serif letters, which helped make the final alphabet feel much more cohesive.

Reflections

Seeing all the images in a grid made me realize how a simple color palette can bring everything together. I learned that parameters can be helpful in design and force you to think of ways to use those restrictions to your advantage. This project also gave me the chance to connect with designers from around the world. We shared feedback, supported each other’s work, and followed along to see what everyone created next. It was a great experience—and one I hope to keep participating in.
